SOTW: Trillian Instant Messenger
I have been on the net for a long time and over the years I have met a lot of really cool people. I spend a good amount of time chatting online with my friends spread throughout the world. One thing that bothered me is some of my friends would use AIM, some would be on Yahoo!, others on MSN, etc. It got to be a pain having three or four programs running to keep in touch with my friends and this is where Trillian comes in.
Trillian allows you to connect to pretty much all of the popular chat programs from one program.
Here is Trillian’s own description of their product:
Trillian is a fully featured, stand-alone, skinnable chat client that supports AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo Messenger, and IRC. It provides capabilities not possible with original network clients, while supporting standard features such as audio chat, file transfers, group chats, chat rooms, buddy icons, multiple simultaneous connections to the same network, server-side contact importing, typing notification, direct connection (AIM), proxy support, encrypted messaging (AIM/ICQ), SMS support, and privacy settings.
Without stealing your home page and with no other included software, pop-ups, or spyware, Trillian provides unique functionality such as contact message history, a powerful skinning language, tabbed messaging, global status changes (set all networks away at once), Instant Lookup (automatic Wikipedia integration), contact alerts, an advanced automation system to trigger events based on anything happening in the client, docking, hundreds of emoticons, emotisounds, shell extensions for file transfers, and systray notifications.
Trillian has been a life saver for me. It is so nice being able to manage all my chat buddies from one central location. I have since upgraded to Trillian Pro which costs $25 but the free version does pretty much everything you could want. I have had no real big issues with Trillian at all. Sometimes webcam support can be a bit finicky in Yahoo! but my webcam rarely gets used so that’s no biggie for me. I was able to find a skin for Trillian which closely matches the Royal Noir windows theme I use so everything looks all pretty and matches (yes I am anal). Best of all, the software is free. If you are using more than one chat client I highly suggest giving it a try.

Hi, would you kindly share the link to the Trillian skin you’re mentioning? I also use the R. Noir theme and I love to have a matching skin for Trillian.

Gendo, the skin I am using is called “Luna Element 5 Black” it’s not a perfect match but it’s pretty damn close. You can find it here familyguy87.deviantart.com/art/Luna-Elem...

September 21st, 2007 at 4:07 pmNow I only need to download it at home, my company blocks lots of sites based on their URL, and the only links to download the skin are on DEVIANart. :S
